## How to use the converter

1. **Choose who the clothes are for and the garment.** Women's dresses and tops are sized by bust, jeans by waist, men's jackets by chest, shirts by collar, trousers by waist, and children's clothes by height.
2. **Convert from a label:** pick the country system printed on the label and the size. The yellow tape strips show the same size in every other system; the pale one is the label you started from.
3. **Or convert from measurements:** switch to *My measurements*, choose centimetres or inches and type what you measured. The first measurement picks the size; the others show where your shape differs from the chart, which matters for fitted cuts.

**What the systems mean.** EU / DE is the German numbering, also used in the Netherlands, Austria and Scandinavia; France and Spain add 2 and Italy adds 6. EN 13402 is the European label pictogram, the bust girth in centimetres. Letter sizes follow the EN 13402 intervals. Japanese sizes come from JIS L 4005 for women and the chest in centimetres for men's suits. Chinese labels follow GB/T 1335: height / girth plus a body type, where Y is slim, A average and B or C fuller around the waist.

**Worked example.** A UK 12 dress is a US 8, a German 38, a French 40 and an Italian 44. The German table cuts it for an 86–89 cm bust; in Japan that bust falls between sizes 11 and 13, and a Chinese label for someone 165 cm tall would read 165/88A.

Everything is worked out in your browser, so nothing you type leaves your device.

## Map legend

- **Tape strip**: The same size in another country's system.
- **Pale strip**: The label you started from.
- **Body measurements**: The bust, waist, hip or height a size is made for, not the garment's own size, which is larger by the ease the designer adds.
- **Between two sizes**: Values that fall in the gap between two published ranges go to the smaller size, with a note.

## Where the numbers come from

There is no single world clothing standard, so this chart lines up sizes the way international comparison tables do and shows each size's body measurements from the most complete published table: the German clothing industry's normal sizes, which follow the EN 13402-3 body intervals. Treat every row as typical.

- [Konfektionsgröße (German Wikipedia)](https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Konfektionsgr%C3%B6%C3%9Fe): German normal sizes with bust, waist, hip and chest ranges, children's height sizes and the US toddler sizes by height.
- [Clothing sizes (Wikipedia)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clothing_sizes): the US/UK/DE/FR/IT women's comparison, men's suit and collar sizes, and the bust girth of each JIS L 4005 size.

## Questions

**Why are clothing sizes different in every country?**

Each system grew from a different measurement. German sizes halve the bust in centimetres and subtract 6, French sizes add 2 to that and Italian sizes add 6. US and UK women's sizes count up in twos from old inch-based charts, Japan numbers its sizes by bust under JIS L 4005, and China prints the height and the girth. No law fixes the numbers, so brands also drift over time.

**Is a UK 12 the same as a US 12?**

No. UK women's sizes are four numbers higher than US ones for the same garment: a UK 12 is a US 8, and a US 12 is a UK 16. Australian dress sizes match the UK ones.

**What does 165/88A mean on a Chinese clothing label?**

It follows the GB/T 1335 standard: the garment is made for a person 165 cm tall with an 88 cm bust (or chest, for men), and A is the body type. For women, A means the bust is 14–18 cm larger than the waist; Y is slimmer, B and C are fuller around the waist. For men, A means 12–16 cm.

**Should I go by my label size or by my measurements?**

By measurements whenever the shop publishes a size chart in centimetres or inches, because labels drift between brands while your body does not. Use the label conversion when all you know is your size in another brand or country.

**I am between two sizes. Which one should I buy?**

Go by bust for tops, by hip for skirts and trousers, and by the larger of the two for fitted dresses and coats. Stretch knits are more forgiving than woven fabrics, and it is easier to take a garment in than to let it out.

**How do children's clothing sizes work?**

European sizes are the child's height in centimetres, in 6 cm steps (110, 116, 122). UK sizes are named by age, US sizes use months (M), toddler sizes (T) and then numbers, and Japanese and Chinese labels give the height in centimetres. Measure the child's height and choose the next size up if they are between two.
